As someone who has worked in the publishing industry for over five years, there are two things I have discovered every author needs...a really good editor and a press kit.
The first item, a really good editor, should go without saying, but you'd be surprised at how many people publish books with a host of grammar and spelling errors. Don't do this! It dilutes your message and distracts your reader from fully experiencing and receiving the message you are attempting to convey. Always put your best foot forward and remember that even the best writer needs an incredibly awesome editor.
When seeking an editor for your book, make sure that they understand your overall vision, are not afraid or hesitant to give honest feedback and criticism of your work, are timely, and are abreast of general editing practices and procedures.
In addition to a great editor, every author needs a well written and designed press kit. Why? Because it is an extension of your brand. It explains who you are and what you do. It gives both media outlets and potential speaking venues a glimpse of your brand, and can be a great aid in securing opportunities for you that you might otherwise not have. When developing a press kit, ensure that it adequately conveys who you are and what you are promoting. You should also make certain that it is congruent with the rest of your brand and marketing materials, and is readily available when needed.
